About once a week, I used to enjoy roasted buckwheat kasha back home in Ukraine.
After moving to New Zealand and living here for over 13 years, I only bought buckwheat a couple of times — I really missed this food. So I decided to import roasted buckwheat groats myself to sell here in New Zealand.
Since then, for more than a year, I’ve eaten buckwheat kasha for lunch every single day! I thought I’d get tired of eating the same thing daily, but that never happened. Buckwheat isn’t bland like rice, couscous, or quinoa — and it’s not overwhelming in flavor either.
Buckwheat has its own unique, savory taste. Just with a bit of butter, I can happily finish a whole bowl of kasha on its own!
Back home, we often had kasha served in kindergartens with ox liver and sour cream. Hot milk poured over buckwheat made a delicious, comforting milk porridge for us kids — something we all loved.
Simple, affordable, and incredibly healthy — buckwheat truly is a superfood.
